So you've gotten a referral! You're counting down the weeks or even days! What can you do to get ready for your new arrival?
-- Have you finalized
names? Now is the time to make sure that you and your spouse or partner are on the same page.
-- Does your child require conversion/ are you converting your child? Is your child Jewish already by birth? Check with your local rabbi as far as what the conversion process entails, or what documentation you will need to prove your child was born to Jewish birth parents.
-- Do you need a
mohel for a boy's circumcision? If you are adopting an older baby or child, you should be able to find a mohel who has done those types of circumcisions in the past. Talk to your rabbi for contacts.
-- Get a car seat. This is essential. Your new baby or child can do without most things for a while - and as long as you have a car seat you can drag him or her out shopping for whatever you haven't had a chance to get.
-- Get hand-me-downs. Although you will probably receive some gifts from friends and family, it's not a bad idea to have extra clothes on hand for that sudden growth spurt or the day that your washing machine breaks and your kid has spit up on everything she/ he owns. Guess on what size your baby/ child is wearing now or will be wearing soon and spread the word.
-- Think about officially welcoming your new arrival! Whether it's a formal Simchat Bat (celebration of a daughter) or a celebratory meal after a circumcision or just a laid-back get together for family and friends, it's a great way to say that you're so excited and proud that your child is now part of your family!
