The Uncertainty Factor

When Anna came to us, her case was being processed for adoption. In fact, she was designated fost-adopt, meaning that while she was a foster child, the direction that her case was headed was officially toward adoption. There were no relatives interested, and the details of her case indicated that there wasn't going to be a chance of reunification, even if her birth mom did resurface. In fact, the district attorney working on the case assured us that Anna wasn't going anywhere.

While there were some small ups and downs and lots of hurry up and wait time, we were pretty confident that Anna's adoption would go through. And, thank G-d, it did.

When we were placed with the new baby - I'll call him Adam since I haven't given him a name on the blog - we were told that he should be on the adoption path, that he was placed with us because we are interested in adoption, and the case worker is also an adoption worker. Now, I hear that there may be relatives surfacing, the baby's mother is looking for custody and although the case worker doesn't seem to think that the relatives will pan out, it will certainly be a long road ahead before we know which way this is going to go.

When you adopt through the state foster care system, you are dealing with children removed from every scenario imaginable and even some you couldn't make up. While I certainly wish Adam's mother the best and wish her only good things, and I'll say cliche-ish that my goal is what ever is in the best interest of the baby, I will selfishly say that I hope that Adam stays with us.

We certainly knew that the uncertainty factor looms with any placement through the foster care system, and prepare ourselves emotionally and try to keep some sort of a distance until we know which way things will swing. It looks like we won't know anything for a while - the next court date isn't until January. I'll keep you posted.
