What's it like having adopted kids?

"What's it like having adopted kids?" Is a question I have actually been asked. While I'm never sure what the best response is to this kind of a question, the answer - in my opinion - is this: "Having adopted kids is pretty much like having biological kids."

Try as we might, I think that it's hard to imagine our life with kids - before they join the family. Dooce - a blog I read off and on - put an interesting spin on explaining life with children: Friday: "For those of you who do not have kids and have ever wondered what life would be like, just go turn on a blender and stick your face in it. That."

Well, maybe not that extreme. But seriously, was college exactly what you thought it would be? Is your significant other the exact type you thought you'd wind up with? Has your road to parenthood been as long as you thought it would take? In the end, we really have to wait until we get there to fully understand what the real experience is like.

Such as having children. Of any kind. Granted, there are some differences to raising adopted kids vs. biological kids, but I sincerely feel that each and every child in every family needs slightly different parenting. So based on that feeling, I don't see a need to ask that question. But apparently other people do.

I would have a really hard time answering a question on "What's it like being Jewish?" because I really haven't had any experience with anything else. I think that Anna will find the question "What's it like being adopted?" an odd question - it's like asking "What's it like being a girl?"

Asking me "What's it like having adopted kids?" is akin to asking me "What's it like to be Naomi?" I'm just me. These are just my kids.
